The Rio Olympics are underway and it looks to be one of most entertaining games in recent memory, with Michael Phelps and Simone Manuel sharing a historic night.

There are many exciting sports being showcased at this year’s Olympics, but the one that kept most of us on the edge of our sofas so far were the swimming events. Sprint swimming has always been a riveting event. With a good aerial view of the lanes and a commentary that can keep up with the athletes’ pace, it feels as if we are in right in the pool with everyone.

Australian swimmers shined this year, being the second place team worldwide to snag the most medals. Emma McKeon was the top performer for the women. She won 4 medals: one gold, two silvers, and a bronze. Kyle Chalmers pulled through the most on the men’s side, with one gold and two bronzes. Both of them displayed solid efforts to get their relay teams on the podium!

This year is particularly special for Team USA. Michael Phelps emerged out of retirement two years ago. Attending his first Olympic Games since then, and adding 7 more medals to his collection (five gold and two silver), he brought his total Olympic medals to 28. Simone Manuel became the first African-American in history to win a gold medal in Swimming. She snagged two golds and two silvers. In addition, she set a national record in the 50 metre freestyle and the 100 metre freestyle. Not bad for her first Olympic experience! Both of them brought strength and determination to pull their relay teams to the podium as well.

Sprint swimming may be over, but there is another action packed week of various other sports ahead! If you can't get enough of swimming, the open water 10k marathon may be just for you.

There’s nothing better than kicking back to watch the games on a comfortable sofa with a chaise you can sink right into!
