House of Cards thoughts...who wears the pants in your household?

Growing up in my household it was always what dad says, if dad says so then it was fine. Dad made all the decisions and it was the norm. It wasn’t until I was a little older and was introduced to concepts, such as gender equity that I realised that no, that isn’t the way it should be.

It’s interesting watching couples make purchasing decisions - I something different. I see ladies going into the fitting rooms while the guys will slouch on the chairs playing with their phones or be half dozing off. It seems like the ladies were in the ones on control when shopping with guys being accommodating and showing support to their partners.

The US version of House of Cards on Netflix showcases the issue of gender equity. In one of the episode, Franks tells Claire, “I should’ve never made you Ambassador”. After a moment Claire replies, “I should’ve never made you president.” While it may be a simple line but it relates to today’s perception of power and gender. Frank believes that he put Claire in her position, but forgets that she helped him get his. Her indirect actions are just as powerful as his direct actions, but are often ignored.

Who wears the pants in your household? Or are decisions made on the basis of “equity” with both parties having equal say in terms of what to buy or not to buy? Perhaps it’s more about having each party providing different perspectives on various issues like practicality, aesthetics, affordability and comfort.
