“Despite everything, no one can dictate who you are to other people” – Prince, 1958-2016

With the announcement of Prince’s death, many people became introduced in his life and music. Specifically, his 1984 hit ‘Purple Rain’. The lyrics are somewhat ambiguous, and for many decades fans and people alike have tried to find the true meaning behind this song.

A common belief is that ‘Purple Rain’ indicates a desire to be with someone, only to find that it could never be satisfied and that the person loves someone else. Prince has once mentioned that ‘Purple Rain’ is a symbolism to “pertain to the end of the world”.

So what is the true meaning behind Purple Rain? No one can know for sure.

The lyrics of Purple Rain are said to be like his persona: alluring and mysterious. As such, perhaps Prince wanted us to come up with our own interpretation and meanings. To find meaning based on how we feel.

As for me, born in generation Z, I have discovered Prince too late. However, his death has introduced me to his song lyrics, which are timeless and transcends generations as they could still be applicable today.

‘Purple Rain’ is a juxtaposition, whereby the colour ‘purple’ creates a dark and depressive tone. Yet the imagery use of the word ‘rain’ symbolises hope and growth. Perhaps Prince wanted us to be free and live without constraints?

Like he once said, “Music is music, ultimately. If it makes you feel good, cool.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ylXKpn9cgsM
