Desired Living: Leather Vs Fabric Sofas

Shopping for a new leather sofa can be an exciting time for some people, and one of the most important questions when shopping for a new couch is whether to choose leather or fabric. The sofa is a vital part of any person’s home; it is where guests sit when they visit, where people relax after a long day’s work and is usually a piece of furniture people like to show off as part of their flash living room. This is why it is extremely important that time and care is taken in choosing the right sofa. In this blog post I am going to take you through the pros and cons of leather and fabric sofas:

Leather Sofas
Pros:

  • A quality leather sofa such as ones made from top grain cow hide leather are usually more durable and will last longer than a fabric sofa. A quality leather sofa will keep its shape and looks for years to come.
  • Maintenance and cleaning of leather can be much simpler than a fabric sofa as all it takes is a little dusting and a quick wipe.
  • Unlike fabric, leather does not accumulate dust mites, pet dander or other allergens.
  • A leather sofa’s colour is more likely to last longer than a fabric sofa as the colour on a fabric sofa may fade due to excessive use or washing.

Cons:

  • However, even though leather sofas won’t hold onto pet dander and hair, leather sofas are not recommended for owners of pets which are not trained. Scratches from dogs and cats will be difficult to fix.
  • Generally, a leather sofa will reflect the room temperature or your body temperature. This can be a problem for households without air conditioning, as on a hot day the sofa will cause you to sweat.

Fabric Sofas
Pros:

  • Fabric sofas tend to be much more comfortable than leather sofas as fabric tends to be softer and warmer than leather. Leather can feel hot and sticky in the Summer and cold in the Winter.
  • Fabric sofas tend to be less expensive than leather sofas.
  • more variety of fabric types

Cons:

  • Fabric can often be stained by food and drink that is spilt on the sofa, families with young children may see this as a turning point and opt for a leather sofa.
  • Allergens, pet dander and dust can also get caught in the fabric making it particularly dangerous for people with allergens.

Choosing which material you want your sofa to be very much depends on the tastes of the consumer. A leather sofa brings a longer product life and needs less care. Alternatively, fabric sofas tend be extremely comfortable and have a superior comfort level as opposed to leather sofas, while promising not to break the budget.
